Vital sign monitor uses are many and varied. Whether utilized in a hospital, by a paramedic in an ambulance, or in a hospice care situation for the elderly, the ability to accurately measure human responses is extraordinarily important, and well integrated into our medical care system.

Vital sign monitors allow modern healthcare workers to efficiently, accurately, and quickly monitor their patients, whether in a hospital or office setting. Whether vital sign monitors are used for a single purpose or to measure all of a patient's vital signs, their technology renders these diagnostic tools compact and accurate. Basic vital sign monitors have become increasingly portable and available for in-home use. Utilizing vital signs monitors enables knowledge of important information about a patient's health. They are vital in assessing a patient's over all condition.

In other words, vital sign monitors serve as an important measuring tool, and can indicate a patient's overall health and his degree of stability. For example, monitoring pulse rate provides information about the function and health of the heart. It determines if one's heart is pumping blood adequately, and monitors symptoms such like dizziness or shortness of breath. And the pulse rate can also monitor overall medical conditions or the use of medications.

A vital sign monitor can be digital with manual or automatic inflation, such as digital portable finger blood pressure monitors with automatic inflation.

Vital sign monitors can be employed anywhere, even outside of a standard medical setting. They can be utilized for in-home care, in a doctor's office, or administered by team doctors on professional athletes on the playing fields.

Despite their varied uses, the most common use of vital sign monitors remains in the hospital setting: either in operating rooms, by nurses in hospital recovery rooms, or for the consistent monitoring of patients under long-term care. They're also used frequently by paramedics and emergency room staff, when trauma victims of necessity require the closest monitoring.

Different kinds of vital sign monitors are used for different purposes, of course. Integrated vital signs monitors, also known as multi-parameter monitors, are utilized for all over patient monitoring. However, the NIBP monitor and blood pressure cuff are utilized specifically for blood pressure readings. ECG or heart monitoring systems are used primarily in a hospital setting, although they are becoming more popular in doctor's offices as general health indicating tools.

Finger pulse oximeters and SpO2 monitors consistently measure the oxygen saturation of a patient's blood, and are again primarily used in a hospital setting.

From basic vital signs monitors to advanced anesthetic monitors, there are a vast range of vital sign monitoring devices designed for patient evaluation in many settings.
